Generally Accepted Forms of Identification for Notary Services:

The notary public's primary responsibility when identifying a signer is to ensure they are who they claim to be. Therefore, the ID presented must meet certain criteria:

• Current and Valid: The ID must not be expired. An expired ID is generally not acceptable.
• Issued by a Government Agency: It needs to be an official document issued by a federal, state, or local government entity.
• Contain the Signer's Photograph: The ID must include a clear photograph of the signer that allows the notary to reasonably identify them.
• Contain the Signer's Signature: The ID should bear the signature of the person presenting it.

Commonly Accepted Forms of ID:

• Driver's License: A valid driver's license issued by any U.S. state or territory.
• State-Issued Identification Card: A non-driver identification card issued by a U.S. state or territory's Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent agency).
• U.S. Passport or Passport Card: A valid U.S. passport or passport card issued by the U.S. Department of State.
• U.S. Military ID Card: A valid identification card issued by a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.
• Alien Registration Card (Green Card): A valid permanent resident card issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
• Foreign Passport: A valid passport issued by a foreign government. It's often recommended that foreign passports also have some form of U.S. entry documentation (like a visa, if required).
• Unacceptable ID: If the ID presented is expired, damaged, doesn't have a photo or signature, or appears altered, the notary will refuse to perform the notarization.
